I am an active researcher in Human Computer Interaction, a sub-area of Computer Science concerned with methods and principles on how to design computer interfaces so that people can interact effectively with them. I specialize in computer supported cooperative work, where I investigate how people work together, how the computer and related technologies (groupware) affect group behaviour, and how software can be designed to support and augment group work. I also work in information visualization and manipulation techniques for large data spaces, which allows both individuals and groups to understand and manipulate their information space.
4 books published, 13 journal papers, 8 refereed videotapes, 36 refereed full conference papers, 13 refereed short conference papers, 4 edited journals/proceedings/video proceedings, 9 invited book chapters (excluding reprints), 9 other invited publications, 9 reprinted articles, 14 articles in non-refereed publications, 4 manuals, 12 independent papers produced by people under my supervision, various software packages. .
I teach a normal teaching load in the Department of Computer Science. As a consultant, I also teach industry-oriented courses through the Faculty of Continuing Education and at company sites. I have received two teaching awards, including the Award of Excellence in Teaching from the Faculty of Science. I currently supervise one graduate student, and have supervised five M.Sc. students and a Ph.D. student to a successful conclusion. I regularly participate in PhD supervisory committees, thesis defences, and candidacy examinations.
