Abstract
This short encyclopedia article briefly surveys both the current technology and new paradigms for user interfaces and how they are designed. It describes their evolution from job control languages to command languages and how they moved from text-based teletypes and cursor-addressable VDUs to window-based bitmapped displays. It highlights command-driven interfaces, menus, forms, natural language, direct manipulation. It introduces hypertext, multimedia, groupware and cyberspace. It also describes the relevance of design guidelines, user interface toolkits and interface evaluation to interface design
